Challenge

The Shuttleworth Foundation gave Sea Monster a Flash Grant to develop an education-based AR (Augmented Reality) game. We used the grant to develop a game that we believe is both exciting and valuable to childhood education.

THE ANIMATED CHARACTER

And so Pengy was born, a child-friendly penguin with a jacket, goggles, and a rocket that he can light – because poor old penguins can’t fly.

Pengy interacts with AR triggers, asking children to solve maths problems and helping them to discover the correct answers.

The project aims were:

1. to show that an AR game can excite children and add to their maths skills, and;

2. to introduce less-fortunate children to the cutting edge of technology.

We wanted the children to interact directly with an animated character and the maths problem itself.
