Sea Monster was delighted to again partner with Wish Films in 2013 on a great project for the BBC. Having previously partnered with Wish Films to deliver Florrie’s Dragons (52 x 11”) to Disney Channel UK in 2010, our next project saw us producing animated segments for Melody, a new series for Cbeebies about a partially sighted girl with an incredible imagination.
The main character is a 6-year-old girl called Melody who visualizes wonderful stories and characters from the story or poem that is read to her by her mother, accompanied by a piece of classical music. As Melody is partially sighted the laws of the sighted world do not limit her imagination and, therefore, the animation segments of the show.
Louwrisa Blaauw (aka Louwki) was the lead creative on Melody. She describes how ‘the vision for the Melody stories was to create simple, engaging animations in a style which goes beyond literal representation to create a more sensory audio-visual experience,’ and so this project gave our animators a rather unique license to create surreal, abstract environments that would be as accessible to the partially sighted as possible.
